Rabbit Tails

A few weeks ago I was walking out of a hotel in a metropolitan area on my way to talk about camp. Out of the corner of my eye I caught the strangest scene. A full grown rabbit ran across the parking lot. Now for camp that's a pretty familiar sight; however in this budding metropolis it was quite peculiar. It got me thinking about a cartoon I once watched with my daughter.
In the show they taught us about why rabbits have bright white tails. It seems that when a predator begins pursuit of a rabbit it focuses in on the bright white tail. It becomes so mesmerized with the tail that when the bunny ducks under cover and tucks its tail the predator can no longer see the rabbit. It is camouflaged. It has disappeared.
As I think about today's culture it makes me realize that our world is filled with white rabbit tails that distract us from what is truly important. Everyone is vying for our time, attention, and money. It all takes our focus away from the things in life that truly add value and joy. We spend our lives focused on the newest technology, the prettiest clothes, and all the other things that pull our focus. We lose sight of family, friends, and God.
In scripture we read "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal." It seems that we often spend our energy on things that are not of eternal value. I think often we find ourselves later in life realizing that life would have been better if we spent more time with family, friends, and God. We find ourselves regretting our time and energy focused on work and business. They are important to our well being; however they were not intended to be the focus of our lives. They leave us wanting, wondering where did the rabbit go.
I hope that you will find ways to focus on what is most important in life. I hope that you will fill your life with treasures that cannot be taken and that leave you feeling empty. I hope that you fill your life with things that add value and joy to this life we've been given.
Camp is one of those places that helps me realize what is important. It has been a clarifying force throughout my life. It is a great place to shed off many of the rabbit tails of our lives and to see what truly matters. Its a great place for children and youth to begin realizing what matters most.
